Is Running Bad for My Knees?

Who here has been told that running is bad for their knees? πŸ™‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

The slightest bit of pain anywhere below the hip and someone says β€˜well you know all that pounding is bad for your joints, right?’

πŸ™…πŸΌβ€β™€οΈWrong

Now this is all coming to you from someone who lost the genetic lottery where knees are concerned. Seriously, I just had my 3rd knee surgery. But running has nothing to do with the cause. In fact, it may have prolonged the need for this operation!

A 2018 study found that the prevalence of hip & knee arthritis was less in active marathon runners than the general public

A 2019 study found improvement to damaged subchondral bone of the tibial and femoral condyles in middle aged marathon runners

Another 2019 study looked at recreational runners who had completed 1000 marathons. They conclude that running 1000 marathons may not have a harmful effect on the knee joints and may not result in osteoarthritis

And a study from just last year stated that medial knee cartilage is unlikely to withstand a lifetime of running without positive adaptation

Now there’s so much more coming out, but it’s great to see lots of interesting research helping to put this myth to bed πŸ™…πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

So, who’s heading out for a run today to support their joint health? πŸ‘‡πŸΌ
